Four minutes after Iryna Zarutska boarded the Blue Line train in Charlotte, NC on August 22nd, 2025, a black man named Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. pulled a pocketknife from his hoodie and stabbed her three times from behind, including at least once in the neck. Zarutska remained conscious or semi-conscious for nearly a minute before bleeding out and collapsing on the floor where she died. 

As the murderer exited the train, he simply stated, "I got that white girl."

Each of us responded to this horrific scene in a number of ways, but one of the most common discussions was how Iryna could have been "our daughter, our sister, our mother, our wife." In a lawless land, which lets animals roam free, this is the inevitable result. 

In October 2025, a scientist announced that he would be naming a newly discovered butterfly species in memory of Iryna, calling it "Iryna's Azure". The butterfly primarily flies in April in South Carolina, and features light blue wings on its top side, but can also have "a distinct violet-blue tint". [You can read the news report here]
